Monday, January 9 Memories of a Red Sox Ambassador After he retired as Salem School Superintendant in 2002, Ed Curtin became a Red Sox Ambassador. Today he tells us about his experiences in the Red Sox front office. He also shares Red Sox folklore.
Wednesday, January 11 Salem Today Salem is coming alive. The Peabody Essex Museum is world class and the downtown is full of people from morning to night. Mayor Kimberly Driscoll has been a key player in putting municipal finances in order, promoting regionalization and persuading city unions to act as team players. Come and hear Salems dynamic mayor.
Wednesday, January 18 Industrial Salem - Using maps and photographs from his extensive archives, longtime Salem collector and author Nelson Dionne discusses Salem's industrial century that lasted from 1860 to 1970. Mr. Dionne shows us Salem railroads and trolleys, cotton, leather and shoe manufacturing and other commercial activities. He also shows us how this activity led to filling in acres of Salem's rivers and coast.
Monday, January 23 Application of Biotechnology to Medical Treatment Explorer Paul Kip Martha practiced medicine as an endocrinologist, taught in medical school and then was an executive or directed research in 8 biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Today he educates us about biotechnology including current and potential treatments for treating diseases.
Wednesday, January 25 The Real Whitey Bulger Author Phyllis Karas is a professor in the College of Communication at Boston University. She has co-authored three books on Whitey Bulger. For her latest, Where's Whitey?, she collaborated with former South Boston Irish mob enforcer Kevin Weeks. This is a book of historical fiction about where and how Bulger and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, spent 16 years on the run. Today, Prof. Karas describes the process of writing her book and gives us insight into the real Whitey Bulger.
Monday, January 30 Salem State University Study and Travel Institute Trips to Europe Through Salem State University Study and Travel Institute tours, faculty members educate tourists about subjects of interest. A recent tour focused on the Holocaust. Today, Christopher Mauriello (Chair of the History Department) and Stephen Matchak (Chair of the Geography Department) discuss the travel institute and the possibility of a tour to Europe for Explorers.
Monday, February 6 Current Events Explorer Donald Harlow-Powell moderates a lively discussion group examining local, national and international issues. Each participant is encouraged to bring articles or subjects of interest for discussion by the group.
Wednesday, February 8 Purchase of Alaska - Jeffrey Pearlman of the Salem State University Geography Department returns to Explorers for another of his informative, understandable and popular presentations. Prof. Pearlman explains why we bought Alaska, our largest state, in 1867 for 7.2 million dollars.
Monday, February 13 Explorer Morning at Hollywood Hits Today we move our meeting to the Hollywood Hits Movie Theater at 24 Endicott St., Danvers (exit 24 off Route 128). We will be shown the movie "Albert Nobbs" starring Glenn Close. Hollywood Hits manager Scott Przybycien will give a presentation about the Hollywood Hits movie business including the new technology that they have just installed. Theater doors will open around 9:30a.m. so that we can start at 10:00a.m. Hollywood Hits will collect a $5.00 admission fee at the box office.
Tuesday, February 14 Volunteer Vacations Salem State University Biology Prof. Tracy Ware discusses her experiences with volunteer vacations in Belize, Costa Rica and Madagascar. She describes the process of choosing the right program, domestic or international, and presents useful information all volunteer vacationers should know. Come and find out about this creative way to travel, learn and make a difference.
Tuesday February 21 Early Salem Pioneer Village K. David Goss is the Director of Museum Studies and Scholar-in-Residence with the Institute for Public History at Gordon College. He is the author of The Salem Witch Trials. Today he discusses Gordon Colleges programs about the history of early Salem with emphasis on Pioneer Village, a living history museum.
Monday, February 27 US Unraveling: A Political Conversation Explorer Frank Hawke is a conservative Republican, Explorer Dave Rose is a Constitutionalist and Explorers course leader John Fox is a progressive Democrat. Although people with such radically different political views often avoid conversation with each other, these three men enjoy knowledgeable and respectful conversations about United States politics. Come and listen in.
Wednesday, February 29 Challenges and Rewards of Running a Business in Russia - Michael Schwartzman was a leading mathematician at the Soviet Academy of Science before moving to the US where he became a successful hedge fund manager. From reading, visits to Russia and information gained from friends and acquaintances who are Russian citizens and emigrants, Mr. Schwartzman has kept informed about running a business in Russia. Today, he tells us the fascinating story.
Backup Barbra Streisand The esteemed Explorer Georgie Sawyer grew up in artistic circles in New York City. What other Explorer personally encountered George Gershwin? Today she tells us the interesting story of Barbara Streisand, a singer and activist known to almost everybody of Explorer age.
