        Summer in Salem EXPLORERS LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE
        2010 SUMMER INTERSESSION (with Stem Cells Course)


The Explorers program of Salem State College is one of more than 400 Lifelong Learning Institute chapters across the U.S. Membership is open to anyone 50 years of age or older. Intersession programs are free and open to anyone of membership age.

Wednesday, July 7 – War Against Al Qaeda.
    Randall Miller of the SSU History Department returns to intersession to give us an update on Al Qaeda. He examines what Al Qaeda has been doing since 9/11, how we have been fighting the war against them and the growth of homegrown terrorism and recruitment in the United States.

Monday, July 12 – Colonialism and Nation Building.
     For six years, Explorer Richard Sides served as an official in the colonial government of Kenya. He has spent many years thinking about colonialism and nation building. Come and hear a lecturer with unique experience and knowledge.

Wednesday, July 14 – What Your Grandchildren Are Doing.
   
 Do you wonder what your grandchildren are doing when they tweet? What is Facebook all about? Kathleen McDonald of the SSU Center for the Performing and Creative Arts explains Twitter and Facebook to the uninitiated.

Monday, July 19 – Power of Music.
     When Ron Cohen speaks, he exudes the knowledge of and enthusiasm for music. Ron is an Explorer who was once the director of a high school choir. He still lectures, performs, and contributes to periodicals. He is interesting enough that he once appeared on the Maury Povitch TV show with his choir. Today Ron shows us the many ways in which music influences our lives including our emotions.

Wednesday, July 21 – Defensive Driving Clinic.
   
 John Paul, the Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Southern New England, conducts a clinic aimed at reducing traffic crashes associated with older drivers. The clinic is designed to increase understanding of the skills associated with seeing, adjusting speed, margin of safety and certain driving emergencies.

Monday, July 26 – Identity Theft and Scams and Fraud.
    Elderly and retired persons are often the targets of scam artists and unscrupulous companies looking to make a quick buck. To educate us about such threats, Rachel Meyer of the Better Business Bureau lectures and answers questions about identity theft. Then she repeats the process for scams and fraud.

Wednesday, July 28 – WWII Propaganda through Cartoons.
   
 Kara Kaufman of the SSU History Department has previously delighted intersession audiences with lectures on a number of subjects. Today she takes us back to contemplate the cartoons that supported the patriotic propaganda effort of World War II.
Monday, August 2 – A Curious Controversial Conundrum.
    Whenever she is in charge of an intersession meeting, Explorer Marcia Kestenbaum fills the room. Today she leads the discussion of
“A Curious Controversial Conundrum”. She has asked that further information about the subject not
be disclosed in advance.



Wednesday, August 4 – Colonel Jeremiah Lee and His Covert Activities in the Early Revolution.
   
 For 16 years Judy Anderson was the curator of the 1768 Jeremiah Lee Mansion, a historic house of national significance for its exceptional craftsmanship. Today she tells us the compelling story of the little known Revolutionary War hero who originally owned the house.

Monday, August 9 – Immigration Rights and Wrongs.
    Avi Chomsky is Professor of History and Coordinator of Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies at Salem State College. She traces much of her scholarly work back to the year that she worked for the United Farm Workers union in 1976-77. Today Dr. Chomsky provides a history of U.S. immigration and an analysis of the current U.S. immigration situation.

Wednesday, August 11 – Italian Wines.
   
 Eric Olson is the proprietor of Salem Wine Imports whose lecture on wines at intersession last year wowed the audience. For him, wine is both a business and a great pleasure. Today he provides a two-hour tutorial in Italian wines from top to bottom. Questions from the audience are essential.

Monday, August 16 – Massachusetts Government Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.
   
 Robert Dawe has served in many public offices including Selectman in Essex, Licensing Commissioner in Lynn, and a member of the Essex County Advisory Board. Today he provides the history, the status, and some possible future directions of Massachusetts government that you will not find anywhere else. As an example, he tells us why all Massachusetts counties have county governments except Middlesex and Essex.

Tuesday, August 17 – Stem Cells (Session 1) - Basics.
   
 Tracy Ware of the SSU Biology Department is an expert on stem cells. Today she begins a three meeting course on stem cells by explaining the basics of stem cells, development, and terminology. An in-class assignment and exercise is given to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to learn the basics and get their questions answered.

Wednesday, August 18 – Why We Are Who We Are.
   
  Explorers Grace Ittleman, Nancy Ramsden, Alan Schwartz, and David Rose look back at the influences that have profoundly affected their lives. During this interactive program, audience members are invited to participate in the discussion.

Monday, August 23 – Stem Cells (Session 2).
   
 Dr. Ware continues her course with an overview of stem cells in medicine. Attendance at one prior lecture by Dr. Ware is a pre-requisite for attending Session 2. Reading is assigned as homework.

Wednesday, August 25 – Stem Cells (Session 3).
    Dr. Ware leads a discussion of specific diseases and their potential to be treated with stem cell therapy. All are welcome to attend, regardless of any previous experience. The discussion is limited to those diseases chosen by students in Session 1.

Backup – Current Events.
    Joe Rogers moderates a lively discussion group examining local, national and international issues. Each participant is encouraged to bring articles or subjects of interest for discussion by the group. If another intersession meeting is cancelled, this meeting will replace it.
